How a Printer Supplier Became Our Network Backbone
Back in early 2023, I was assigned to upgrade the network infrastructure for our main production floor. Beyond Switches: The Kyocera Ecosystem Surprised Me
After we deployed the Kyocera 6300 switches across three buildings, I started paying more attention to their other products. We already used Kyocera cutting tools (their ceramic inserts are incredible for stainless steel), and our office had a fleet of Kyocera printers. I'll admit my sample is limited — I've only evaluated Kyocera switches for our specific mid-size manufacturing environment. If you're running a hyperscale data center, your experience might differ. But for industrial and office networks, Kyocera delivers solid reliability at a fair price. And the group synergy means you can standardize on one vendor for cutting tools, printers, and networking — simplifying your supply chain and support contracts.
Final Reckoning: Did I Make the Right Call?
One year later, we have 12 Kyocera 6300 switches in production. Zero unplanned downtime. Our maintenance team loves the web interface. Our IT team (which I handed back to) appreciate the CLI compatibility with industry-standard commands. And the total cost came in 30% below the Cisco quote — even after accounting for a few extra SFP modules.
But here's the real lesson: the time I spent testing upfront — about 40 hours — probably saved us from a much bigger headache. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. That's true whether you're choosing a switch, a cutting tool insert, or a paper tray.
Would I recommend Kyocera over Cisco for everyone? No. But if your business already uses Kyocera products, or if you value out-of-the-box reliability over brand prestige, give them a look. You might be surprised by what a "printer company" can do.
