What I Learned About Kyocera From a Flip Phone Lockout, a Hydro View, and an E5 Error

The morning it started

Last spring, a supervisor from logistics knocked on my office door holding a Kyocera flip phone. He'd decided to change the screen lock the night before, then typed it incorrectly six times. The phone's display showed a lock icon and would not respond. "You buy these things," he said. "You must know how to unlock a Kyocera flip phone."

I did not know. I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized company—about 200 employees across three locations. I handle most of the device and supply purchases, from paper clips to printers. The real lesson here is the one I always tell vendors: prevention is cheaper than correction. Five minutes of checking a connector before you order a new machine can save you real money. A little documentation when you buy a phone can save you a week on the phone with support.

And I finally learned what a connector is, not from a textbook, but from a flathead screwdriver and a guy who knew where to push.
